Pookafun History
We know how busy life isbefore having a family, but when we have our first baby, and then second, (I was not one of the moms to venture past 2!), we can only dream of having some alone time when there’s still natural light pouring in the windows. With this being said, I guess I wasn’t busy enough when I decided to work on an idea I had when I was on my second maternity leave.
Like many women, I had a rough go at breastfeeding the first time around. The pain was almost not worth it, but I was not giving up. After days of working on getting a proper latch, Griffin and I final had it right. I would spend hours a day with him in my arms just because I wanted to hold him. Griffin’s time nursing was not quick; he would take his time. He nursed until he was just over a year. Knowing that we had enjoyed our time, I knew it was time to move to the sippy cup!
When Garrison was born I remembered the joys of nursing. We had instant success with the latch and I had already built up a ‘tough skin.’ I cherished our time together, knowing that he would be our last baby. He was an efficient eater, which was fine seeing that Griffin would require my time as well. I remembered what it was like with an older baby when Garrison was more interested in his surroundings while nursing and he began playing with whatever he could get his hands on.
I saw a necklace that was made of colourful beads which was meant to provide a tactile aid for babies to prevent them from pulling hair or sticking fingers up your nose. I decided to make my own. I didn't like it. Garrison pulled on it hard and it became uncomfortable. That’s what inspired a new idea.
I took some white flannel, fabric markers and ribbons and created my own ‘nursing scarf’. I wore it while Garrison nursed and he loved it! He played with the ribbons, enjoyed touching the soft flannel and was engaged by the bright images. Seeing that I had fun making it, I was thinking this would be great for other moms too! The only problem, it took hours to create one with markers.
That’s when I enlisted the help of my wonderful husband, Neil. With his computer expertise, and our Apple computer, I was able to design my first prototype of the ‘nursing scarf.’ I got a number of them printed, sewed them and added the ribbons. I was pretty pleased with how they had turned out. After taking time to finess the design, we went into full production of the Noobee® in early 2007.
Now, with my teaching career, and our energetic boys, I am able to make some time to work on my business, Pookafun. There are two versions of the Noobee®, the Jr and Sr, and I am in concept stages for future Pookafun products that will offer the same variety of educational activities in a textile product for young children and parents to love.
